Well, at least I have a summer job!
I got hired (after 3 interviews, no less) at Torrid, a plus sized clothing store. I’m super excited for the discount and the expensive teacher clothes I’ll now be able to afford.
And if all else fails for the fall, I can continue to have a job in the evenings and weekends after subbing.
The Power of Tumblr. The Beauty of Strangers.

My name is Ray Stoeser. I am a high school teacher living and working in Detroit. Below is a testament to the power of Tumblr and social networking. Most importantly it is about how 554 complete strangers helped change the lives of my Detroit students.

I had my first interview today.
I felt strangely relaxed during it. I wasn’t as nervous answering the questions as I thought I would be. I think that’s a combination of knowing what I know and the really friendly department chair who was interviewing me.
The one question that threw me through a loop was “What was one question that you’re prepared for that I haven’t asked yet?”
It took me...

I bought yet more books for my future...
I’m already out of room for my own books, which I keep buying, FYI. I have a huge stack of books sitting in my car trunk indefinitely because I have nowhere to store them in my bedroom. I’m thinking I’ll have to buy a big plastic crate and keep them all in there, and hope I don’t run out of room in there.
My kiddos better appreciate this in the long run.

The set up for the show is a little different this season than any other:
There are 3 teams, mentored by Bobby Flay, Alton Brown, and Giada DeLaurentis (sp?)
Each team has 5 members and their mentor star guides them through strenuous challenges that tests their culinary knowledge, their ability to function under extreme pressure, and not to mention their performance on camera and in front of a...

I don’t get it.
From the time you are in Kindergarten, parents, teachers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, church members, and everyone you know will talk about your future. “She’s such a bright girl” or “She has so much life ahead of her” or “The possibilities are endless for a girl like you”. You…
I absolutely agree with you. I’ve only been out of college for a few weeks,...

I’ve been before, so I’ve done most of the touristy stuff. Except go to the top of the Sears Tower, which would be ok to do, except I’ve also been on the top of the Eiffel Tower, and St. Paul’s Cathedral, and other high up places and it doesn’t do as much for me as it does for other people.

I have a meeting/interview/something with a department chair for a maternity leave for first quarter next year.
I went into CLS today and one of the English teachers is pregnant and was asking me about what I’m doing next year and when I said nothing right now, she basically begged me to take her maternity leave. She asked for my email…
And by the time I left CLS, the department...

Book Challenge
I’m just going to do this as a long Q&A because I try and fail at doing the daily challenges all the time. Don’t hate me for my choices.
Day 01 – Best book you read last year The Hunger Games. I was a little late to the party. Day 02 – A book that you’ve read more than 3 times Chesapeake Blue by Nora Roberts Day 03 – Your favourite series Harry Potter by JK Rowling. And also the...

I applied at Torrid at my mall today at a whim and got a call for an interview during dinner tonight. I’m interviewing on Friday. I’m excited for the potential discount!
But I just got an email a few minutes ago from a mom who wanted to know if I was interested in interviewing to watch her children. I would be making about half of what I made last summer (I WAS SO SPOILED LAST SUMMER)...

I’m quite excited to see them, even if they were buttheads half the time.
I was going to stop by second and third hours too, but they’re having a big test tomorrow and Ben doesn’t want me to freak them out, so I’m not going to. I’ll go back next week and visit because I miss those kids the most. (shh! it’s a secret.)

Make sure you tell them thank you for agreeing to take you. My CTs asked me if I was scared and I told them that I was, point blank, and they thanked me for being so honest, so remember that it’s okay to admit you’re scared.
Go in there with some questions (I...

It’s not even the end of May and already I’m feeling overwhelmed and defeated.
I apply and apply and apply and then… nothing.
Nada.
Not one call, not one interview. I find out that jobs are filled by the fact that when I go to resubmit my application to send it to the top of the pile, the vacancy I applied for is no longer there.
Yes, I know there’s all summer. And lots...
2012 college grads enter improving job market →
infoneer-pulse:
The class of 2012 is leaving college with something that many graduates since the start of the Great Recession have lacked: jobs.
To the relief of graduating seniors — and their anxious parents — the outlook is brighter than it has been in four years. Campus job fairs were packed this spring and more companies are hiring. Students aren’t just finding good opportunities, some...

I got my copy of the summer book club book!
I found it at my local library and thought I would snatch it up before someone else did.
I forgot how awesome libraries are. They’re so convenient when you’re dirt poor like I am and have too much time on my hands. Reading anything I can get my hands on right now.

When does a student deserve to fail?
– -A question on a job application I just filled out.
I feel like this is a trick question. I firmly believe that all students can and deserve to learn. But I also feel like when a student refuses to put in the effort necessary for success that they deserve to be punished for the lack of effort. If I...

I’m so anxious!!!
I had to fill out about 3 pages of short answer questions about why I want to work for CMFK, some of my experiences with different things (professionalism, problem solving, etc.), and what my ideal job would include. I feel like I was at an advantage as I’m much more adept at writing than speaking. But still.
Although, the woman I would be replacing is all for me...

No, it’s not a full-time school year teaching job.
But hey, I need money now, too. Let’s hope I get it!
